The Bijou area is located between Pioneer Trail and Highway 50 and is divided into two areas; Bijou 1 and Bijou 2. Bijou 1 makes up the majority of the land area and is where most of this area's Lakefront homes are located and Bijou 2 is the much smaller “pocket” near the west side of Highway 50 and Johnson Blvd. Home sales in Bijou tend to be higher compared to other areas on the South Shore, even though Bijou is one of South Lake's oldest neighborhoods. Why you ask? This particular area provides a great opportunity for those seeking to be near the amenities found with "in-town living". As well as homes that are level and easy to get in and out of during those heavy Tahoe winters.
Bijou is located near it's very own 9-hole golf course, the Heavenly Ski Resort, Casinos AND the lake which makes it the perfect area for primary residences. The houses throughout this area represent a wide range of styles, ages and sizes, which also add to it's popularity. The average home usually consists of three bedrooms, two baths and approximately 1,300 square feet of living space. Many of the homes throughout Bijou also feature beautiful mountain and/or meadow views. What else could you ask for in a Tahoe neighborhood?!
Bijou's neighborhood formation came in 1929 when William Bliss (son of D.L. Bliss of Tahoe's lumber industry) developed Bijou Pines. 50' x 100' lots were available for $250 which you could buy for $25 a year with interest deferred payments. As advertised in their brochure, "Bring your children to your own cabin site for the summer of Great Tahoe oudoors. Where they learn every flowers, trees, rocks, mountain peaks, streams and every clod has a story to tell of a great universe. They will learn "big muscle activities", the foundation for adult life' where they learn to be dependent for their amusements on themselves. Where the parent does not hear the youngster's continual plea "What can I do next?" There is always something to do that will give children an experience which will bring them rewards in health, happiness and character building."
Why live here?
Within walking distance of both Bijou neighborhoods are several gems of South Lake Tahoe. There is the historic 9-hole Bijou golf course set in a meadow with vistas of the Heavenly Ski Area and Freal Peak. The course is excellent for cross country skiing and nature walks during the off season. Nearby El Dorado Beach picnic area and boat ramp which has been remodeled in 2012. Complete with snack bar, restrooms, boat storage and beautiful terraces to enjoy breathtaking views of the lake. The City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation complex is also nearby, it includes a year round ice skating rink and swimming pool, seasonal playground and indoor gym. The Bijou Community Park is also conveniently located off of Al Tahoe Blvd. This park offers basketball, volleyball, a BMX and skate park, disc golf course and a dog park. Shopping, restaurants and other amenities are also very close by.
